Other hotels in Richmond London simply do not compare to the history and heritage of The Petersham. Standing atop Richmond Hill for over 150 years, this is the perfect location for overseas guests looking for true English charm near London, as well as those who seek a cosy and comfortable escape with their partner. The Petersham stands between what remains of Richmond Hill’s Common and Petersham Common. These were originally the grazing grounds of the various animals that would stray across the manor boundaries. In 1639, a strip of land on the Richmond side of the boundary was granted to Francis Barnard, on the condition that he made and maintained ‘a sufficient fence… with a gate and stile’ between the two commons. This strip of land was later split into three sections.
At the top end, the villa called ‘The Wick’ replaced the Bull’s Head tavern in 1775. At the bottom end were stables (now the Rose of York pub). Our history can be found all over our hotel, within the art that graces the walls, the plaques decorating the communal areas and the sights of the grazing animals that still wander around the neighbouring meadows.
